I love my sourdough starter!
But I don’t love having to throw any of it out when I go to feed it!
So I’ve developed some amazing recipes that use that discard starter so there isn’t any waste.
I’ve gathered up 7 of my family’s favorite sourdough discard starter recipes and put them all right here just for you!
From breakfast to dinner, sweet and savory, there’s got to be something here that’ll tickle your fancy.
So, in no particular order, here they are.
These Sourdough Blueberry Lemon Muffins are one of those things that gets requested for all the gatherings. The blueberries are nestled in a slightly sweet batter and covered in a lovely crunchy lemon streusel topping. What's not to love? So whether you're making them for the coffee break at the church, a morning meeting at work, or just for the family, you can be sure they will be a home-run! Running a close second to the blueberry muffins above, these savory scones are another sure fire hit where ever you take them! Chunks of ham and the cheese of your choice are bursting out all over. Add some fresh or dried chives and brush with garlic butter for the perfect breakfast on the go. Or relax with your favorite hot beverage and nibble at your leisure. What can I say about pizza? Except, "PIZZA!!" We love our pizza in this house. Friday night is pizza night all year long. And this crust makes an appearance every time I have extra discard. Bonus: You can make these crusts up ahead of time and pop them in the freezer until you're ready to use them. Pizza night just got easier! You know those scones that you get at that coffee shop that seems to be on every corner? Yeah. These aren't those! These aren't the least bit dry, and have a beautiful crumb. Studded with tart cherries and brushed with a sweet cinnamon glaze, these scones are amazing hot from the oven or eaten cold. Who doesn't love a pretzel? These are soft and chewy, and topped anyway your little heart desires. Need snacks for the game? Top with sea salt and serve with spicy mustard. Want to make a pretzel sandwich? Use some everything but the bagel seasoning. Breakfast on the go? Try topping with sugar and cinnamon. Anyway you top them is gonna be a winner! Biscuits. My Southern heart loves you! Biscuits are a staple in the South. And these are made with buttermilk and bale up flaky and buttery every time. Serve on the side, or use them to top off your hamburger stew. Serve them with jam for breakfast. Or dinner if you're so inclined. To take them to the next level, sprinkle them with sugar and cinnamon for a breakfast treat that's perfect to take on the road. Weekend mornings were made for leisurely breakfasts and brunches. And these waffles are just the ticket! Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. Layered with butter and your favorite syrup. Perfection on a plate! For a lovely twist, heat up some pie filling instead of syrup and add a dollop of whipped cream. You won't be sorry!
So there you have it. Our favorite sourdough discard recipes.
At least for now.
